Internships at Heritage Museum

Heritage Museum Internships
All internships require the student be able to stay organized, set goals and keep them. Before any project is started the student must submit a timeline of their expected progress throughout the semester. During the semester, they will meet with the curator at least once a week to ensure the project is heading in the correct direction and address any concerns. Internships may be ended early if the curator does not feel Heritage Museum protocol is being followed.

Exhibit Sign Internship
This project would involve making exhibit signs. It would involve researching artifacts, time periods, culture, or anything to make a visit to the museum more enjoyable and educational.  This internship would work the closest with the curator. The actual research and design would be the student’s responsibility. Deciding what direction to take the signs would be a collaborative effort.

Journalism/ Research Internship
This internship is geared around researching articles to publish in our bimonthly news letter. These articles would have to be on local history and this adds a level of difficulty to the research. The articles would have to be cited correctly and topics pre-approved. A minimum of three articles must be written every two months. This is completely independent; however, the student is more than welcome to any material at the Heritage Museum.
Military Artifact Identification Internship
The general purpose of this internship is to work with military artifacts from throughout American history to identify the artifact and add as much information to our database as possible for the artifact. The person would work mostly independently and have a flexible schedule. The general guidelines would include:

Laying out several tables with artifacts then inviting several veterans groups into the Heritage Museum. Allowing them with notebooks as well as taking personal notes identifying the objects. The intern would then be required to sort through the identification notebooks and find correct identifications.

Proper handling of all artifacts would be required. Being able to work with people and maintain a work schedule is also important.
Early Communication Artifact Internship
The general purpose of this internship would be to organize the typewriters, adding machines, telephones, and radios in chorological order and researching information past date, model, and type when possible.  Then some of these objects would need to be placed on display. This is an independent project. After a training period the student would be required to summit a timeline of expect progress on the project and would check in weekly with the curator. Proper handling of artifacts is required.

Social Media Internship
This intern would work to keep the various social media sites that the Heritage Museum has up and running. This currently includes Facebook and Twitter. This student could also work on launching other social media sites as approved. This student would be responsible for updating all sites at least three times a week as well as finding ways to improve them and reach more people.

Web Design Internship
This internship requires previous experience working with websites. It would involve creating a website that is usable as well as easily updatable. The website design would be largely independent although towards the end of the internship the student would work closely with Heritage Museum board members and volunteers explaining and launching their website.
Create Your Own Internship
This internship first requires an idea. This can range from wanting to launch a new program to building a new exhibit. The intern would be responsible for all aspects of the program from designing it to advertising for it. Another idea might be designing an exhibit. The student would be responsible for creating it, building it, researching it, and if it is not in the budget, getting sponsors for it. All projects must be approved by the curator and then the board.

All full project proposals are required. This includes a full project description, timeline of project completion, any financial needs of the projects, and any other relevant information.  Do not hesitate to contact the Museum for help with the proposal.
