Internships with Agate Publishing

Two internship opportunities with Agate Publishing:

  1. Internship program with Agate
For details on program and qualifications go to: https://www.agatepublishing.com/about-agate/
To apply, email a resume, cover letter, and two nonfiction writing samples, amounting to no more than 3000 words total, and—if you wish to demonstrate design experience—two design samples in PDF format, no larger than 2MB, to internship@agatepublishing.com, with the words “Internship Application” in the subject line of the message.  Best to apply before mid-May for consideration.

  1. Publishing Academy Training Internship Network
Ideal deadline to apply is by May 15 for fall co-hort.  Applications submitted after will be reviewed based on availability.  There is no charge for current students to participate.  Internship placement is not guaranteed, and positions could be paid or unpaid.  Recent graduates or alumni are more than welcome to enroll in “Publishing Basics,”

How does this program work?

Agate has created a national program aiming to scale up its existing training internship to make it more broadly available and sustainable in part by engaging other presses seeking to find and train a more diverse range of aspiring entrants to our field. After completion of the program, the training intern will earn the Publishing Basics certification and become part of Agate Publishing Academy’s network of new professionals and participating presses.

The Training Intern Network is open to enrolled students from colleges across the country who have completed at least half, preferably all, of their third year of undergraduate study. Agate will vet potential candidates’ suitability for the program and supply their contact information to participating presses. These presses are free to choose Agate supplied candidates or not—they are not required to accept any candidate supplied by Agate. Presses will then enroll their training interns in Publishing Basics at a cost paid for by the press, in addition to engaging a training intern for a practicum training period with the press. The terms of this training period (such as hours per week, on-site or remote participation, length of practicum, etc.) will be established by the press and negotiated with the training interns and their institutions.

After completion of the program, the training intern will earn the Publishing Basics certification from Agate Publishing Academy, and become part of the academy’s network of new professionals and participating presses.

The Publishing Basics course and certification offers a comprehensive introduction to how publishing functions as a business. It’s designed to be more focused, more affordable, and more accessible than other introductions to publishing—specifically master’s programs. It features eight distinct online learning modules, each of which is followed by a live 60-90 minute videoconference discussion section. Certificate earners will exit the program better prepared to apply for and win entry-level jobs in publishing.

How do I apply, and what is the timeline for the program?

To apply, candidates should email network@agatepublishing.com a resume and a coverletter with the words “Training Intern Network Application” in the subject line. Applications are accepted year-round, and new cohorts of training interns will usually be launch in mid-late January and mid-late August of each year, roughly corresponding with semester starts.
