Summer Lifeguard Opportunities in PA State Parks

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is currently seeking to employ summer lifeguards in state parks across Pennsylvania. Your assistance is being requested to post this information in your career service offices for students who are receiving or hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate and would be interested in seasonal employment.
Lifeguards make a major impact on the safety of Pennsylvania’s citizens and therefore need to be well prepared, serious, and capable of carrying out all the responsibilities of a state park lifeguard. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources currently utilizes four different lifeguard job titles: Lifeguard, Lifeguard Supervisor, Lake Erie Lifeguard, and Lake Erie Lifeguard Supervisor.
Lifeguards are responsible for patrolling, observing, directing, and monitoring a swimming area at a state park to maintain order and to minimize the threat to swimmers and other park patrons from accidents or drowning. Work involves recognizing when swimmers are in distress or need assistance and rescuing them using accepted lifesaving techniques; administering first aid, artificial respiration, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including adult, infant, and child CPR to injured park visitors. Lifeguards also inspect the condition of buoys, floats, ropes, first aid equipment and supplies, and other safety equipment to ensure that they are in proper operating condition. They inspect swimming areas to ensure they are safe for public use and perform incidental maintenance and custodial duties at a swimming area to ensure it is safe for public use.
The job requirements for the Lifeguard titles are as follows: possession of a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate; or a valid YMCA Lifeguard Training Certificate; and possession of a valid American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety Certificate; or any combination of valid certificates in standard first aid, and adult, child, and infant CPR. In addition, certain positions as a Lake Erie Lifeguard require possession of a valid driver’s license. Please read the test announcement for a complete listing of all job requirements.
