Homework Hotline Supervisor/Professional Math Tutor
Two Openings – 15 hours per week per positionThe Homework Hotline Supervisor/Professional Math Tutors will perform dual roles: supervise the
operation of the Homework Hotline and of the Math Coaches who provide academic support to local high school math students; and provide tutoring and academic support for Penn State New Kensington students enrolled in MATH 140 (calculus) and above.
The Homework Hotline Supervisor/Professional Math Tutors will provide support through the 2015-16 academic year with possible continuation based on supervisory and tutoring effectiveness and on funding availability. Combined responsibilities within the Homework Hotline (2 - 3 evenings per week) and within the Academic Success Center (2-3 days per week during daytime hours) will total approximately 15 hours per week. Two Homework Hotline Supervisors/Professional Math Tutors will share the responsibilities to fully staff the Homework Hotline and the Success Center tutoring hours each week.
Requirements: Must demonstrate an ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with students and instructors. Must hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field with a strong math foundation; Master’s degree, as well as experience in tutoring at the college level, is strongly preferred.
Homework Hotline Supervisor Duties (approximately 10 hours/week): The Homework Hotline operates Sunday-Thursday from 7-10 PM. The supervisor will be expected to work 2-3 evenings per week. Duties will provide an excellent opportunity to enhance technical, leadership, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills and to become a vital part of a new community outreach program based on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s well-respected Homework Hotline
Responsibilities include the following: Oversee nightly operations of the Homework Hotline call center o Support and assist math coaches with difficult calls o On-site monitoring of all tutoring exchanges to ensure appropriate conduct of math coaches o Troubleshoot problems (technical, academic, personnel, etc.) o Complete nightly reports General responsibilities o Conduct surveys o Assist with new tutor training o Complete observations and evaluations of math coaches o Attend meetings with Homework Hotline staff, supervisor partner and others as needed o Assist with endorsement of program within the community o Monitor math coaches’ schedules, attendance and workload o Other duties as assigned
Professional Math Tutor Duties (approximately 4 – 6 hours per week): A combination of scheduled, on-site tutoring sessions and appointment-based sessions, totaling 4 – 6 hours per week, is expected. Responsibilities include the following: Provide individual tutoring sessions for students enrolled in courses including calculus, vector calculus, and discrete mathematics. Other tutoring assignments may be assigned as needed. Facilitate learning and assist students to become a successful, independent learners. Integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize student’s potential for academic progress. Maintain ongoing communication with the coordinator of the Success Center including referrals to other appropriate college resources as needed. Tutor students in specific course material and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning. Encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in other courses. Meet with coordinator and instructors to plan appropriate academic support for students. Perform other duties consistent with the position of professional tutor.
