Job Description:
As a member of the Product Development section of U. S. Steel's Research and Technology Center in Munhall, Pennsylvania, this Technician will be responsible for:
1. Hands-on operation of computer-controlled test equipment, including equipment to measure mechanical properties, formability, and electrical properties of steel.
2. Maintaining this equipment and developing special test set-ups and configurations, as needed.
3. Preparing test specimens, including sawing, shearing, grinding, and milling.
4. Following established quality and safety procedures.
5. Reporting data results and preliminary analyses in spreadsheets, datasheets, written reports, and documenting lab work.
6. Collaborating with professional staff and other test technicians.
7. Occasionally interacting with personnel in other organizations including manufacturing, commercial, and internal customers including traveling to U. S. Steel’s production facilities.
Experience or Qualifications Required:
• Associates Degree in Metrology, Materials, Mechanical Engineering, and minimum of one year directly relevant experience or 4 years directly relevant work experience.
• Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation and testing procedures (ASTM, etc) used for mechanical property testing of steel, including computer-driven test systems.
• Good mechanical skills to program, operate, and maintain laboratory testing equipment, including MTS servo-hydraulic test systems.
• The ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Willingness to travel (10% of time)
• Familiar with scientific methodology.
• Work experience using Excel, Word, and communications software such as Lotus Notes
