Veteran Fire Corps Project Leader

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire Corps Members for the Veteran Fire Corps programs.
The Project Leader will supervise teams of five Veteran members working in partnership with the US Forest Service to complete fire/fuels management work.  Veterans Fire Corps provides recent-era Veterans with the training, credentials and experience they need to competitively pursue wildland fire and/or forestry careers. Projects may include but are not limited to: hazardous fuels reduction, hand-piling of slash, constructing fire line in pre-fire preparation of prescribed burn units, collecting fuel inventory data, FIREWISE educational outreach, trail maintenance, timber marking, and fence construction.  Project work and schedules vary depending on region and season.   
Past locations have included:
·         Black Hills National Forest, SD
·         Shoshone National Forest, WY
·         Prescott National Forest, AZ
·         Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, CO/WY
·         Prescott National Forest, AZ
·         Florida Fish and Wildlife, FL
Program Dates: April through August 2016.  Mandatory Crew Leader training starts April 1, 2016
Primary Responsibilities:
Crew Manager
  • Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
  • Facilitate team operations: food planning/purchasing, tools & equipment, and vehicles
  • Actively handle any behavioral and crew dynamics issues as they arise, in coordination with Program Staff
  • Promote leadership development within the team and evaluate success & potential
  • Maintain professional and consistent communication with Program Staff
Technical Advisor
  • Manage tools and equipment assigned to the team, including maintenance throughout the season
  • Assist in training corps members to complete quality work
Partnership Representative
  • Assist Program Staff in Corps Member Training in late May
  • Collaborate with agency partners to oversee project quality and quantity
  • Work with Program Staff and agency partners on program logistics
  • Ensure successful and timely completion of work project
Administrative
  • Complete required program reporting and documentation
  • Assist Program Staff in budget management and reconciliation
  • Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies and procedures
  • Represent SCA in a positive and professional manner
Qualifications:
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Must have ability to legally work in the US
  • Must be able to attend mandatory Crew Leader training: April 1-10, 2016
  • Wilderness First Aid certification & CPR required by the start of training
  • Minimum 2 years prior experience  supervising groups in an outdoor setting
  • Previous fire line, conservation,  chainsaw, or veterans programming experience
  • Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred  i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
  • Ability to pass the Wildland Firefighters’ arduous pack test
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
  • Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
  • Preferred skill set: Experience leading veterans or fire crews, S212 federal chainsaw certification, S130/S190 federal fire certifications, forestry, geography, GIS, range management, outdoor education and/or related subjects; plant identification; map & compass skills; camping skills; enthusiasm for the outdoors; and a sense of adventure.
Compensation:  $545 weekly salary depending on experience with some seasonal benefits.  Travel to/from site, housing included. Chainsaw and Red Card Certification/training available
