University of Pittsburgh Opportunities Graduate School of Public Health

Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Environmental Health Sciences

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Environmental Health Sciences is designed to provide stimulating and rewarding research opportunities for undergraduates considering graduate education. The goal of the program is to provide students the opportunity for a hands-on research experience with faculty and graduate students the Department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Environmental health is a multidisciplinary science directed towards understanding the mechanistic basis of acute and chronic human diseases or disease susceptibility (e.g. genetic or physiologic) caused by interaction with environmental agents or contaminants. Current research in the department includes: respiratory and cardiovascular toxicology, free radical biochemical toxicology, gene/environment interactions, environmental exposure assessment, and computational and risk assessment approaches to environmental health. Each intern will conduct an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty member. Interns will meet regularly with their faculty mentor to design experiments, review daily journals, discuss research progress, and collaboratively solve research challenges. At the end of the 10-week program, each intern will present their research findings to faculty members, staff and current graduate students. Participants will receive a stipend for the program. Program runs from Monday, May 21, 2012 to Friday, July 27, 2012.***Applications are available on our website www.eoh.pitt.edu

Holy Family Institute Family Counselor Armstrong County

Hours: Full-time. Work some evenings and weekends. Must show flexibility in scheduling to satisfy the needs of the clients.

General Statement of Duties:  The Family Counselor II employee provides service planning, counseling, parent education, case management, risk assessment, facilitating family communication and identifying mental health risk and services for both children and adults. Services are provided in the family’s home.

Essential Functions:

  1. Promotes the Mission and Philosophy of Holy Family Institute.
  2. Provides assessment of family problem areas, level of risk, and community resources.
  3. Develops and implements goal-based services to families.
  4. Provides counseling, family education, and case management services to families.
  5. Documents all progress of services provided.
  6. Work cooperatively with CYF and staff members to insure quality service to each family.
  7. Maintains a positive working relationship with families and fellow staff.
  8. Must meet CYF service delivery time frames for proper client discharge.
  9. Be available to families in the district for crisis situation.
  10. Develops skills training in working with families and children.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree with three (3) years experience or a Master’s degree with at least two (2) years of experience in social service counseling. All services are provided to clients in-home during working hours. Must have reliable transportation and use of a car during working hours. Valid PA driver’s license. Current Act 33/34 and FBI clearances are required. EOE

•Prepares and submits initial and follow-up reports of findings and action taken on each assigned claim in conformity with established procedures.
•Works in partnership with sales and underwriting in the acquisition and preservation of desirable risks. Advises underwriting of any possible risks.

     Baker, chief community affairs officer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, will talk about giving back and making a difference in the community. Baker wrote an inspirational book, “Get Involved! Making the Most of Your 20s and 30s,” that provides insights on being active in the community.
     Sponsored by Rotaract, a campus student club that is affiliated with Rotary International, the talk is free to the public and supported by the Student Activity Fee.

  • Technical Service Analyst - Monitor and provide support for data-warehouse environments. Troubleshoot and resolve load issues and identify schedule issues. - Must be flexible to weekends/holidays and off hour shifts.

  • Database Programmer - Database dictionary maintenance, systems integration through database design.  Must have 5+ years in Oracle PL/SQL programming, Unix/Linus file systems and Oracle query tuning.

  • Sr. Software Engineer - Perform unit, stress and benchmark performance testing.  Provide technical assistance and/or training to other IT personnel.  Experience with Java/J2EE, Web Services (Axis), Unix, XML, SQL
