The AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) is seeking individuals for the entry-level position of Laboratory Assessor. The ideal candidate is interested in traveling extensively across the United States, has excellent communication skills, and has an aptitude for math and science. Laboratory assessors must be detail-oriented, energetic, and have a passion for learning.
About the Position: 
The AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) offers on-site assessments of construction materials testing (CMT) laboratories located throughout all fifty states, Guam, Puerto Rico and Canada. Laboratory Assessors travel approximately 150 days per year in 2-3 week long periods. During these trips, assessors evaluate laboratories’ policies, testing procedures, equipment and personnel for compliance with applicable AASHTO and ASTM standards. This is a full-time position that places a strong emphasis on working independently. When not traveling, duties include trip planning, contacting laboratories, reviewing and submitting assessment reports, and assisting with other programmatic activities as needed. Construction materials currently included in the scope of our assessment program are asphalt, aggregate, soil, metals, plastic pipe, and sprayed fire-resistive material (SFRM).
Education Requirements: 
A four-year degree in science (geology, environmental, etc.) or engineering (civil, mechanical, industrial, materials, or environmental) is required. No prior CMT knowledge or experience is required. Strong oral communication and technical writing skills are essential.
Other requirements: 
Interested candidates must be able to travel independently approximately 150 days per year. A valid driver’s license from any state, a sound driving record, and the ability to drive up to 400 miles per day on occasion are also required for the position. Laboratory Assessors are expected to live within a reasonable commuting distance of Frederick, Maryland. Located at the intersection of I-70 and I-270, Frederick, Maryland is approximately one hour from both Baltimore, MD and Washington D.C. Upon successful completion of a rigorous training program, assessors are permitted limited telecommuting privileges.
Benefits: 
The starting salary for this position is $45,250. In addition, Laboratory Assessors may be eligible for incentive pay once they have successfully completed training.
