OPM is offering free online presentations with a core audience of career counselors (train the trainer), students and alumni.
Explanation of the presentations:
- Finding and Applying for Jobs in the Federal Government (Navigating USAJOBS) (1.5 hrs): This
free online virtual presentation provides an overview of USAJOBS, the
official website for Federal Government employment. The briefing
provides a step-by-step process that covers; creating your account and
profile, managing your account, searching for Federal jobs and
maximizing search results, reviewing Job Opportunity Announcements,
submitting your applications, and following up on your application
status.
- Writing Your Federal Resume (1.5 hrs): This
presentation explains each section of the Job Opportunity Announcement
(JOA) in an effort to better inform applicants and to assist them in
selecting the right job. The presentation highlights a three part
process to assist applicants in writing their Federal resume. Attendees
will be shown a real JOA and walked through reviewing the JOA to
determine qualifications and interest, identifying the important
requirements and then tailoring their resumes with that JOA. Lastly, it
will provide a quick overview of the resume builder on USAJOBS.
- Interviewing (1 hr): This
presentation introduces the audience to the interview process within
the Federal government. It explains the types of interviews
(structured/unstructured), different delivery methods, types of common
questions, responding utilizing the S.T.A.R (Situation/Task, Action,
Result) method and how to also prepare for an interview.
- Pathways Programs – Recruiting and Hiring Students and Recent Graduates into Federal Careers (1 hr): A
focused presentation that introduces the audience to the Pathways
Programs (Internships, Recent Graduates and Presidential Management
Fellows (PMF)). Information presented covers what each program offers to
the job seeker, the basic requirements and employment potential after
each program is complete.
In
an effort to make these presentations easily accessible and reduce any
burden they may place on your school, we offer the following:
1) OPM
has established the dates/times for the virtual presentations (see
below) and set up the Adobe Connect “virtual presentation rooms”.
2) We
have provided the link to the Eventbrite registrations in this email.
Schools can send these links to students/alumni and post it on their
career sites. The purpose is to make it easy for students and allow
them to register on their own. Schools can also send out the attached
flyer if they choose to as well.
3) On
the day of the presentation, registered attendees can view the
presentation from the comforts of their home, work, school or wherever
they have a computer device (or smartphone) and internet (or cellular)
connection. At the same time, you can also host the presentation in
your career centers if you choose to do so (this is not required).
4) As
mentioned above, these presentations are offered as a free service and
are only intended to help educate the public on Federal resume writing.
We will not be recruiting for any agency and will only focus on the tips and techniques required when writing a Federal resume.
We will be holding a one session per month, per subject. Please keep in mind that all times are in the Eastern Time Zone.
If
your school is interested in offering these presentations to your
students/alumni, please disseminate the links as you see fit. We would
also like to recommend career center staff attend so they can continue
to pass along the information (train the trainer) after the sessions are
done. If you have questions or concerns, feel free to call me at the
below number or email me and I will get your questions answered. If you
collaborate with other schools in your area, feel free to forward this
invite to them as well.
