UPMC Internships - PSNK student had great experience!

One of our PSNK students had a great summer internship at UPMC and wants to share the opportunities with all our students – there are internships in a variety of majors available.  Here is what she sent to post:


This summer has been awesome and I am continuing through November! There are 7 different programs that students at our campus could take part in. It is very competitve with over 5,000 applicants this past summer and only 84 being chosen. I have been going to networking events, executive roundtables, touring UPMC facilities, working on a service project, and working on projects within my office.

Last year, Penn State's Fall Career Days, hosted by Penn State's Career Services, welcomed recruiters from 500 companies around the nation. For this year's 2012 Fall Career Days, Sept. 11-13, recruitment numbers have exceeded that total by 9 percent. "Since last November, all activity has steadily increased between 6 to 9 percent, from each of the Career Days to on-campus interviewing," Jeff Garis, director of Career Services, said. "We've been really vigilant with recruitment numbers, and everything is showing an increase."

HappyFeet is mobile soccer program and has 2 immediate P/T coaching positions. We are looking for a few great people who love working with children for part time employment in the area of Cranberry, Hampton and Murrysville, Pennsylvania. Future sites are being developed

9am - 1pm, Monday-Friday - can earn $18-50/day  - variation of these hours is available as well as higher earning potential. There are a few afternoons available if interested.

Available on Saturday mornings? We are looking for a few HappyFeet league coaches. Eight week program starts in October at various sites.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with children ages 2 through 6 plus a history of, or interest in, children's fitness.

Applicants must be warm, caring, EXTREMELY ENERGETIC, GOOFY, and FUN while able to maintain a sense of order and control. Ideal coach will be able to commit to 6 months or longer.

Soccer coaching experience is not required. Training will be provided.

All candidates who have experience working with young children will be considered. Great for college students and stay at home moms and dads.

Must have a cell phone, reliable transportation, and be able to pass a background check. MUST live in the area to minimize drive time.

Innovation Works Job Opening

The Investment Associate will report directly to the Chief Investment Officer (CIO).  The Investment Associate’s primary role will be to assist the CIO in managing the many transactions that occur  within  Innovation Work’s portfolio of companies on a day-to-day basis.  This individual will be responsible for helping to maintain the various investment and portfolio related databases and sources that IW builds and employs, assist in maintaining follow-on investor relationships, and  take on additional projects as required.  The Investment Associate will also assist IW’s in-house Legal Counsel with various legal tasks related to portfolio companies. The Investment Associate is a key employee within Innovation Works and the position requires the highest level of integrity, responsibility, and organizational skills. The Investment Associate will receive broad experience in managing venture capital transactions, due diligence and legal aspects of private equity investments. 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Maintain IW’s portfolio company database of securities including debt, equity, warrants and other
  • Work with portfolio companies to ensure capitalization tables are continually up to date
  • Keep up to date the IW master portfolio spreadsheet of external follow-on investments
  • Assist Legal Counsel as needed
  • Prepare documents for, attend and record and disseminate accurate minutes for all Investment Committee meetings
  • Input quarterly investment data into data reporting services such as Moneytree and Dow Jones
  • Incorporate and maintain investor contact information in SalesForce
  • Assist CIO in maintaining regular contact with potential follow-on investors
  • Revamp and/or create high level VC “pitch book” similar to investment banker style deal books
  • Regularly check and update portfolio company listings on the IW website
  • Create and maintain a database of terms sheets
  • Create and disseminate annual reports on financing trends
  • Assist in managing issues around portfolio company collections and final reports
  • Attend various venture/angel fairs and other events
  • Help with new funding sources such as Heinz, Hygrid, CDFI, SSBCI, etc.
  • Support CIO in managing the investment funnel, prepping board materials, due diligence, etc.
  • Assist CIO in investor outreach as required.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Minimum BS/BA, finance or scientific/technical degree preferred.
  • Preference for an individual with work experience and/or  familiarity in the venture capital and/or entrepreneurial areas
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with complex spreadsheets, databases, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Self-starter willing to take initiatives
  • Strong sense of accountability and attention to detail
  • Ability to juggle many competing priorities/deadlines
  • Highest personal integrity and team-orientation
